Over a decade ago, I kicked in $15 to fund a documentary film about early the phone hacker known as Joybubbles. After making goal, the project updated a few times, and then when quiet… for a good three years.
I didn’t mind the loss of $15; all I’d bought was an acknowledgement in the credits, not even a copy of the film. But I was sad that the project never completed after the anticipated release date.
An update in 2018 showed that the project had not been abandoned, and sporadic updates about once a year have followed since.
Then, ten days ago, project author Rachael Morrison just announced that the film has been completed and will be screening at Sundance Film Festival in January 2026.
For a kickstarter that raised under $15,000 in 2014, it’s original goal to release in 2015 obviously was overly optimistic. Ms. Morrison should be commended for her commitment and dedication to the project, to see it through even a decade later. Congratulations, you made it!
I’m looking forward to viewing it in the near future.
